ICELAND - Rúntarinn

Flataskóli’s entry for the Schoolovision competition in Iceland is the song “Rúntarinn” by Steindi Jr. The song captures a unique and lively aspect of Icelandic culture centered around “going for a rúntur,” which is a common expression meaning to go for a drive for fun or leisure.

This tradition is especially common among young people, particularly those who have recently obtained their driver’s license. For many, going on a “rúntur” is an important social activity and a way to spend time with friends. In fact, this kind of cruising culture exists in almost every town and community across Iceland, where each place often has its own familiar routes and meeting spots.

During these drives, it is popular to make stops at various places, with one of the most iconic being a visit to get a hot dog.

A total of 17 boys from Flataskóli take part in the project. They are responsible for performing the song, as well as producing, filming, and editing the music video together. The result is a fun and energetic video that reflects both the spirit of the song and this distinctive Icelandic cruising culture.

Congratulations on the decision to let the kids do their own thing and have them take care of all the jobs themselves.

In our class, we had different views on these joyrides as new drivers. But we all agreed: your costumes are brilliant. You’ve brought your idea to life in a really creative way. The tune is cool.

At first I thought the colourful figure behind the tree was an elf, a fairy or some other figure from Icelandic mythology. But the children at school were all in agreement: it’s a hot dog. As you can see, we didn’t just listen to the lovely song, we also watched the video closely and looked for your island on the map of Europe.
